The three keys to a healthy pain free, life filled with vitality, strength and stamina are
- Eliminate inflammation and Build Immunity
- Build Lean Muscle Mass
- Balanced blood sugar
One of the things you have to remember is that our bodies are whole interconnected systems and an imbalance in one area influences and affects another area. So each of these three essentials must be addressed not just one.
Inflammation
Inflammation is one of the silent killers (like stress) that has all encompassing effects that cause a great deal of problems and are difficult to treat with medications. I discuss inflamma-aging in greater detail “here”. Conditions that affect the whole body and are difficult to isolate can’t be treated surgically and in most cases are treated with anti-inflammatory drugs to address symptoms which does nothing for the underlying cause and does nothing to prevent further deterioration. The main thing you have to know about inflammation is that the body is constantly combating it. Inflammation damages tissue and releases toxins so the body must mitigate that. When your body is working on a problem it’s not doing it’s normal repair and restore functions. Anyone who has had a bad cold knows how draining a blow infection can cause. Inflammation has the same effect though we usually continue to go through our daily activities making up for fatigue by sleeping longer on the weekend or taking an aspirin until our head ache goes away. At some point these measures fail and we are faced with a more serious health crisis. In other words this is one of the places serious illness begins. We all know that we don’t just wake up with heart disease, there are steps to get there and this is one of them.
Lean Muscle Mass
What are our muscles for? It may surprise you to know that our muscles do more than hold us upright and allow us to lift, pull, pivot, digest and breath. Our muscles are a storage system for protein as well as other nutrients. We talked about inflammation, did you know that our bodies metabolize protein (C-reactive protein) from our muscles to combat inflammation? So when we have less muscle mass not only are we weaker and less able to function as agially as we would like to, we have less reserve to defend ourselves from the damage of inflammation. When our defenses are weakened as in chronic conditions we open ourselves up to further decay or debilitating disease.
Balance Blood Sugar
You may not have thought of the muscles as being a storage system for protein but I’m sure you’ve heard that fat is a storage system for glucose (blood sugar). Where we run into problems leaving blood sugar unchecked is that it tires out. Specifically our insulin metabolism tires out. Why this is important is that our brain relies on glucose and it can’t survive long without it. So the feedback loop between circulating glucose and insulin balances out that need. When we eat poor nutrient foods that contain higher levels of glucose then our bodies can easily metabolize our body increases insulin levels. At some point problems with insulin occurs and we experience symptoms such as fatigue, foggy thinking, poor concentration, head ache, dizziness and nausea. Eventually we develop more serious conditions such as diabetes, where supplemental insulin is required.
